Former President Relocates After Clash With Government Forces in Mirinayo
MOGADISHU – Former Somali President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed has moved out of the house where he had been staying in the Mirinayo village of Abdiasis District in the Banadir Region.
Sharif Sheikh Ahmed moved into the Mirinayo village on Tuesday of this week. Fighting later broke out between forces of the Federal Government of Somalia and his security guards from Wednesday afternoon until the early hours of Thursday morning.
A delegation of traditional elders, led by the chief of Sharif’s clan, along with the Commander of the Somali National Army and the Chairman of the Military Court, visited the former president for talks aimed at persuading him to return to his previous residence near the airport area.
The Federal Government insisted that former President Sharif vacate his new residence and return to the secured compound around Aden Adde International Airport in Mogadishu.
During a press conference held by opposition leaders last night, former President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed who was in Abdiasis District at the time was notably absent.
At the briefing, opposition figures accused President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of seeking to eliminate former President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed.
Meanwhile, earlier this afternoon, the former president reportedly faced an obstruction after leaving the residence where he had stayed for the past two days.
He was accompanied by the Army Commander and the Chairman of the Military Court when they were stopped at a checkpoint located near the Banadir Regional Administration headquarters and the Central Prison.
Sharif Sheikh Ahmed served as the 7th President of Somalia from 2009 to 2012 and is one of the member parliament in present.
