Man Arrested in Nigeria Over AI-Generated Voice of President Tinubu

A man accused of creating and circulating an AI-generated audio recording that mimicked President Bola Tinubu’s voice has been arrested by Nigerian authorities.

The suspect, identified as Ifechukwu Dennis, is alleged to have produced the synthetic voice clip and distributed it across social media platforms, where it quickly spread and gained widespread attention.

The manipulated audio reportedly contained fabricated statements attributed to the president, including comments on national security challenges and the upcoming elections. The clip triggered online debate and concern before authorities moved to intervene.

Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga confirmed the arrest, stating that the suspect was picked up in Benin City, Edo State, by an elite police unit following an investigation into the viral content.

He described the recording as a deliberate attempt to mislead the public and warned that such digitally altered content poses a growing threat to information integrity, particularly in politically sensitive periods.

Authorities say the case highlights the increasing challenge posed by AI tools that can generate highly realistic audio and video content, making it harder for the public to distinguish between authentic and fabricated material.

The presidency has firmly dismissed the audio as fake and urged Nigerians to exercise caution when engaging with content shared online, stressing the importance of verification before reposting or reacting.

Officials have also warned that the build-up to the general elections could see a rise in coordinated disinformation campaigns, with AI-generated media expected to play a larger role in shaping narratives and influencing public perception.

Security agencies say investigations are ongoing, while reinforcing efforts to monitor and curb the spread of misleading digital content across platforms.
