A study conducted by the mental health portal Very Well Mind, has revealed a relationship between individuals’ personalities and their music preferences. Surveying over 36,000 people globally, the study delved into various musical styles and correlated them with the ‘Big 5’ personality traits: extraversion, agreeableness, openness, conscientiousness, and neuroticism.
Here are some intriguing findings that emerged from the comprehensive survey:
Rap/Hip Hop Fans:
Contrary to stereotypes associating this genre with aggression or violence, the study found no such link. Instead, rap/hip hop enthusiasts tend to exhibit high self-esteem and are generally more outgoing compared to fans of other music styles.
Pop Music Aficionados:
Fans of pop music are described as individuals with “high self-esteem,” showcasing extraverted (outgoing) personalities. They are also noted for their honesty and hardworking traits.
Country Music Enthusiasts:
Devotees of country music were found to be hardworking, conventional, outgoing, and conservative. They tend to be emotionally stable and score lower than others in openness to new experiences.
Rock and Heavy Metal Devotees:
While often projecting images of anger and bravado, fans of rock and heavy metal were discovered to be gentle, creative, and introverted individuals with lower self-esteem.
Dance Music Followers:
Fans of dance music typically exhibit outgoing, assertive, and open-to-experience traits, albeit ranking lower in gentleness compared to other groups.
Classical Music Admirers:
Those who appreciate classical music were found to be somewhat introverted but at ease with themselves. Creativity and healthy self-esteem were common characteristics among this group.
Jazz, Blues, and Soul Enthusiasts:
Fans of jazz, blues, and soul tend to be extroverted with high self-esteem. Intelligence, creativity, and a general sense of ease were prevalent traits among this music-loving cohort.
This study offers a fascinating glimpse into the intricate connections between musical preferences and personality traits. It emphasizes that the tunes we resonate with may offer valuable insights into the depths of our individuality. As the harmony between music and personality continues to unfold, it adds a new layer to the understanding of how we express ourselves through the melodies that move us.
