11-Year-Old Hero Hailed After Saving Drowning Man
A frightening moment at a swimming pool in Lexington, Kentucky, ended in hope after an 11-year-old boy stepped in to rescue a man who had slipped beneath the water while adults looked on in disbelief.
The boy, Avory Woolery, said he spotted the man lying unconscious at the bottom of the pool on Wednesday evening.
Realizing every second mattered, he put on his goggles, dived into the water and pulled the victim toward the surface.
“I was like, somebody’s gotta do something. No one was doing anything, so I put on my goggles. I went underwater. I grabbed him up,” he told local broadcaster WKYT.
Once the man was brought out of the pool, another bystander joined in to help while CPR was administered until emergency responders arrived.
Woolery said he could not stand by and watch someone lose his life, explaining that everyone deserves a chance to survive.
The Lexington Fire Department later confirmed the victim was taken to hospital in serious condition, although no further update on his health has been released.
The remarkable rescue has earned the young boy widespread admiration online, with many praising his courage, calmness and willingness to act in a moment when it mattered most.
For many, Woolery’s bravery served as a reminder that heroes are sometimes the least expected people in the crowd.
