A 70-year-old man, Mr. Anthony Mgbe, from Umuagu, Inyi, Oji-River Local Government Area of Enugu State, has been remanded in prison by an Enugu magistrate court. He faces allegations of raping and killing a 15-year-old girl.
Mgbe was charged with two counts by the police: ‘unlawful carnal knowledge of a minor’ and ‘unlawful killing by having unlawful carnal knowledge of the minor, causing her to bleed to death.’ These charges are violations of sections 308, 309, and 274(1) of the Criminal Code of Enugu State.
The Women Aid Collective (WACOL) shared that the magistrate court, due to the severity of the offense, denied bail and scheduled the case to resume on November 22, 2023. Reportedly, concerned community members alerted WACOL about Mgbe’s repeated violence against women and girls, often evading justice due to his children’s influence, who silenced the victims. Seeking protection and legal support, the deceased’s family sought WACOL’s intervention. Subsequently, the WACOL legal team petitioned the Enugu State Commissioner of Police, leading to Mgbe’s arrest and court appearance.
