Togo’s President Faure Gnassingbe has approved a controversial new constitution abolishing presidential elections, granting Parliament the power to select future presidents.

This move, following his party’s parliamentary election victory, extends presidential terms and introduces a one-time term limit, potentially allowing Gnassingbe to extend his rule beyond 2025.

Critics see it as a bid to prolong the Gnassingbe family’s rule amidst increasing restrictions on civic freedoms, including protest bans and media constraints. The revised constitution also creates a prime ministerial position, further consolidating Gnassingbe’s control. Civil society groups are calling for protests to restore the previous.
