Alcaraz Overcomes Sinner to Win US Open, Returns to World No. 1
Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz captured the 2025 US Open men’s singles title on Sunday, defeating Italy’s Jannik Sinner in four sets to reclaim the world number one ranking.
Alcaraz, 22, won 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 at Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York, securing his second US Open trophy and the sixth Grand Slam title of his career. The victory ended Sinner’s 27-match unbeaten streak on hard courts and reversed the outcome of their Wimbledon final clash in July.
“I tried my best today. I couldn’t do more,” Sinner said after the match. The Italian also lost to Alcaraz in this year’s French Open final.
The win makes Alcaraz only the fourth player in history to claim major titles on all three surfaces — hard court, grass, and clay. It also prolongs the US Open’s streak without a successful men’s title defence, a record that stretches back to Roger Federer’s five straight victories from 2004 to 2008.
The final was played under tight security following the arrival of US President Donald Trump, whose presence delayed the start by 30 minutes. His appearance drew a mixed reception from the crowd.
On the women’s side, world number one Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus successfully defended her title, defeating Amanda Anisimova of the United States 6-3, 7-6 on Saturday to claim her fourth Grand Slam crown. She became the first woman since Serena Williams in 2014 to win back-to-back US Open titles.
