Algerians are heading to the polls on Saturday, but many are showing apathy toward the election, feeling it will not bring any meaningful change. Incumbent President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, 78, is widely expected to win a second term.
Several voters have expressed disillusionment. Mourad Boulaam, a local resident, shared his frustration: “The three programs did not convince me…I will not be voting.” Similarly, Walid Ait Hassan remarked, “These elections are no different from the last ones…promises, but in the end, just lies.”
The two challengers, Islamist Abdelaali Hassani Cherif and socialist Youcef Aouchiche, are not generating much enthusiasm. Political analyst Tarik Hafid believes the main issue lies in voter turnout. Opposition parties, discontent with the system, have called for boycotts.
