At 39, prof. Aina Takes the Helm of JAMB After Oloyede’s Era
In a development that has stirred excitement across Nigeria’s education sector, 39-year-old Professor Adebayo Aina has been appointed as the new Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, succeeding Professor Ishaq Oloyede after years of transformative leadership.
The announcement, made by the Federal Government on Thursday, marked a historic moment for the nation’s tertiary education system, as Prof. Aina becomes one of the youngest individuals ever to occupy the influential position. His appointment has already generated widespread reactions from education stakeholders, university administrators, students, and policy experts who described the move as a bold step toward youth-driven reforms in the sector.
Prof. Aina, an accomplished academic and technology expert, previously served as a professor of Educational Measurement and Digital Learning at a leading Nigerian university. Known for his innovative ideas and strong advocacy for transparent examination systems, the new registrar is expected to build on the achievements recorded under Oloyede’s administration while introducing modern strategies aimed at improving service delivery.
Speaking shortly after his appointment was confirmed, Prof. Aina expressed gratitude to the Federal Government for the confidence reposed in him. He promised to uphold integrity, transparency, and excellence in the conduct of examinations and admissions across Nigeria.
“I understand the enormous responsibility attached to this office. Education remains the backbone of national development, and I am committed to ensuring that JAMB continues to operate with credibility, efficiency, and fairness,” he said.
He also pledged to deepen the use of technology in examination processes, reduce technical challenges experienced by candidates during the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), and strengthen collaboration with tertiary institutions nationwide.
The outgoing registrar, Prof. Oloyede, congratulated his successor and urged him to remain focused despite the challenges associated with managing one of the country’s most sensitive educational agencies. Oloyede, who assumed office in 2016, was widely praised for repositioning JAMB through financial accountability, improved examination monitoring, and the adoption of computer-based testing systems.
Under his leadership, the examination body reportedly remitted billions of naira into government coffers while reducing widespread malpractice that once tarnished the credibility of the institution.
Many observers believe the incoming registrar has a difficult task ahead in maintaining the standards established during Oloyede’s tenure.
Education analysts, however, insist that Prof. Aina’s relatively young age may become an advantage rather than a limitation. According to them, the appointment reflects growing confidence in younger professionals with modern administrative and technological ideas.
A lecturer at the University of Lagos, Dr. Samuel Ekanem, described the appointment as “a refreshing development capable of inspiring younger academics across the country.”
“Prof. Aina represents a new generation of educational leaders who understand the digital realities shaping modern learning and examinations. His emergence could usher in faster reforms and improved student experience,” he noted.
Students also welcomed the announcement, expressing hope that the new administration would address issues such as delayed examination notifications, technical glitches during registration, and high costs associated with admission processing.
Meanwhile, several youth organizations praised the Federal Government for entrusting a younger professional with such a strategic national assignment. They argued that the decision could encourage merit-based leadership appointments in other public institutions.
As Prof. Aina prepares to officially assume office in Abuja, expectations remain high regarding the future direction of JAMB. Observers believe his tenure will likely focus on digital transformation, improved examination security, and greater accessibility for candidates across rural communities.
For millions of Nigerian students seeking admission into tertiary institutions every year, the leadership transition signals the beginning of another important chapter in the history of the examination body.
Whether Prof. Aina will surpass the legacy of his predecessor remains to be seen, but his appointment has undoubtedly opened a fresh conversation about youth leadership and innovation in Nigeria’s public sector.
