Bishop Matthew Kukah has expressed support for President Tinubu’s proposed tax reforms, viewing them as a potential solution to Nigeria’s financial mismanagement. Speaking on Channels Television, Kukah emphasized that the reforms should foster national development and promote fiscal responsibility.
Despite some critics’ concerns that the reforms could unfairly target certain regions, Kukah believes they could be a turning point for Nigeria’s economy. He noted, “Nigeria is a very energetic country… but the inability of states to create enough platforms for citizens to express their energy often leads to violence.”
Kukah also criticized the elite’s role in mismanaging the nation’s wealth, stating, “The reforms should end the narrative of Nigerians living in a country so richly endowed but are spectators to the rascality and irresponsibility of the elites.”
He concluded, “This is the beginning of a very long journey of fiscal management and efficiency,” urging Nigerians to engage in meaningful dialogue to ensure the reforms bring about positive change.
Kukah’s backing for the reforms shows a hopeful but cautious stance. If implemented fairly, they could spark the fiscal transformation Nigeria desperately needs. However, the challenge lies in ensuring the reforms benefit the broader population, not just the elite.
