A public exchange between singer David Adeleke and former presidential aide Reno Omokri has sparked widespread reactions online after a series of posts escalated into personal attacks on social media.
The dispute began after Reno commented on delays surrounding his appointment as Nigeria’s ambassador-designate to Mexico, linking part of the delay to ongoing international engagements tied to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Davido reacted to the statement in a viral post, mocking Reno and referring to him as “Bingo,” a remark that quickly spread across social platforms and triggered further debate among supporters of both figures.
In his response, Reno shared screenshots of Davido’s post and expressed disappointment at the tone of the singer’s reaction, saying he did not expect such language from a globally recognised Nigerian artiste.
He argued that criticism between public figures should remain respectful, insisting that personal insults should not replace meaningful engagement, especially when discussing national or sensitive issues.
Reno also referenced his earlier criticism of Davido’s appearance at a World Cup-related event, where the singer wore a customised jacket bearing the names of abducted schoolchildren from Oyo State.
He maintained that his concern was about the message such a gesture sends on an international stage.
According to him, while the intention behind the outfit may have been to draw attention to insecurity in Nigeria, it risked amplifying fear and inadvertently giving criminal groups additional visibility.
He further contrasted Davido’s approach with that of American streamer IShowSpeed, who he said used the same global platform to promote Nigeria in a positive light through his outfit and public remarks.
The exchange has since divided opinion online, with some users defending Davido’s right to highlight Nigeria’s security challenges, while others agree with Reno that international events should be used primarily to project positive national branding.
