Ebola cases surge again in eastern Congo as health officials warn of widening outbreak

Health authorities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo say infections linked to Ebola Virus Disease have continued to rise, deepening concern over the spread of the outbreak in the country’s east.

Officials report that transmission remains heavily concentrated in Ituri province, where most of the confirmed cases have been identified, as response teams intensify contact tracing and surveillance efforts in affected communities.

The Ministry of Health says dozens of suspected contacts are still being monitored, while field teams work in remote and insecurity-prone areas that continue to slow down response operations.

Health workers note that although the situation remains serious, recovery is possible when patients are treated early at designated centres, with survivors already sharing accounts of their discharge and recovery.

At an Ebola treatment facility in Bunia, recovered patients were released after testing negative, an outcome officials say highlights the importance of early detection and access to care.

The outbreak response is being challenged by limited access to affected zones and the complexity of the strain involved, with no widely available vaccine for the current variant.

Despite the setbacks, health authorities say containment efforts are ongoing, while neighbouring countries continue to strengthen border monitoring to reduce cross-border spread.
