The African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Nigeria is facing turmoil as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) investigates key members of the opposition coalition aiming to challenge President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 elections.
Former Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal was interrogated over allegations of fraudulent cash withdrawals amounting to N189 billion, suspected to violate the Money Laundering Act.
Tambuwal remains in EFCC custody as investigations continue. The ADC confirmed that three former governors linked to the coalition have been summoned by the EFCC.
The party accuses the commission of politically motivated actions intended to intimidate opposition leaders, alleging selective prosecution favoring the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). The EFCC has denied these claims, insisting on its impartiality.
The probe has deepened existing divisions within the opposition, with some members, including loyalists of Peter Obi, expressing concerns of marginalization.
Meanwhile, prominent politicians such as former Lagos Governor Akinwunmi Ambode and former Ekiti Governor Kayode Fayemi have reaffirmed their commitment to the APC, dismissing rumors of defection.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar postponed plans to join the ADC amid speculation about former President Goodluck Jonathan’s possible 2027 presidential bid.
Amid this, the ADC has appointed Nafiu Bala as Acting National Chairman, who pledged to strengthen party unity, internal democracy, and alliances ahead of the general elections.
