Fresh Violence Leaves Residents, Police Officers Dead in Katsina, Kaduna

A fresh wave of violence has claimed lives in Katsina and Kaduna states, where separate attacks by armed bandits left residents dead in one state and police officers killed during a rescue mission in another, raising fresh concerns over the worsening security situation in Nigeria’s North-West.

The latest incident in Katsina occurred in Sayaya community, Matazu Local Government Area, where gunmen reportedly invaded the village in the early hours of Thursday.

Witnesses said the attackers fired sporadically, forcing residents to flee as panic spread across the community.

By the time the attackers retreated, seven residents had been killed. The victims were said to include farmers and traders, while several families abandoned the area for fear of further attacks.

Residents alleged that the assault came shortly after security personnel deployed to the community following earlier attacks were withdrawn.

They claimed the gunmen were led by a notorious bandit commander who has been linked to a series of kidnappings and deadly raids across Matazu and surrounding communities.

The attack has renewed memories of the abduction of retired Major General Abubakar Rabe and his wife in May.

Although his wife was later rescued, the retired military officer died while in captivity, prompting renewed calls for stronger security measures in the area.

Meanwhile, security operatives in Kaduna State rescued nine kidnapped victims during an operation in Birnin Gwari Local Government Area after receiving intelligence that armed bandits had abducted several people from their farms.

According to the Kaduna State Police Command, officers, alongside other security personnel, tracked the suspects to a forest hideout, where a gun battle forced the kidnappers to abandon the victims and flee.

However, the successful rescue was followed by tragedy when suspected bandits ambushed the returning security team. Two police officers sustained fatal gunshot wounds during the attack.

Kaduna State Commissioner of Police Rabiu Muhammad described the fallen officers as courageous men who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

He said tactical operations had been intensified to apprehend those behind the ambush and prevent further attacks.

The fresh incidents come as residents across parts of Katsina continue to express concern over renewed bandit activities, saying many rural communities remain vulnerable after the withdrawal of security personnel from some affected areas.

Authorities in Katsina said they were still verifying details of the Sayaya attack, while security agencies in both states pledged to sustain operations aimed at restoring peace and protecting vulnerable communities.
