Former Gabonese President Ali Bongo has officially announced his departure from politics a year after being ousted in a military coup. In a letter addressed to the Gabonese people, Bongo stated, “I wish to reaffirm my withdrawal from political life and the definitive renunciation of any national ambition.” His statement also called for the release of his wife, Sylvia, and son, Noureddin, who remain in detention on corruption charges.
Bongo claims they are being tortured and used as “helpless scapegoats,” emphasizing that their detention is unjust. The former president’s health had been in decline following a stroke in 2018, raising concerns in the lead-up to the disputed 2023 election. Bongo also highlighted his restrictions, revealing that his movements are closely monitored by the military.
He called for an end to the violence and urged national reconciliation, admitting, “Too many Gabonese people are still suffering, and this remains my greatest regret.” Though the junta has not commented on his recent statements, they have previously denied torturing his family. The coup leader, Gen. Brice Oligui Nguema, has promised free and fair elections for the nation’s future.
