The Golden-20 Association of Awgbu, located in Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State, has made a significant contribution to supporting the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members posted to the region.
The association has provided two eight-room lodging blocks, each consisting of four rooms, to serve as accommodation for corps members stationed at local schools.
These new facilities have been constructed at the Community Secondary School and Community High School in Awgbu.
In addition to the housing project, the association has also invested in infrastructure improvements at Awgbu Grammar School.
A borehole was drilled, modern toilet facilities were built, and a five-classroom block was renovated to enhance the school’s learning environment.
At the inauguration event, Chief Oliver Okoli, President of the Golden-20 Association, announced the award of 10 university scholarships for the 2024 academic year.
These scholarships, valued between ₦800,000 and ₦1 million each, will support students pursuing higher education.
Okoli also took the opportunity to celebrate the success of 10 graduates who had completed their degrees under the association’s 2019 scholarship program.
Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, the Commissioner for Education, commended the Golden-20 Association for its ongoing commitment to educational development and its role in supporting corps members, who play a critical role in bridging the educational gap in schools.
She also shared that the state had recently hired 8,115 new teachers and upgraded 21 schools to “smart school” status, with plans to establish one such school in Awgbu.
Capt. Casmir Nwafor (rtd.), Chairman of Orumba North LGA, outlined plans for further expansion, including the construction of additional accommodation for corps members.
He urged community leaders to ensure the safety and security of the corps members during their service.
Mrs. Pauline Ojisua, the NYSC State Coordinator, expressed her gratitude to the association for their efforts, affirming that the new facilities would be fully utilized and would allow for more corps members to be posted to the area.
She encouraged the corps members to demonstrate discipline and dedication in their service.
Rev. Sr. Mary Nwafor, the Principal of Community Secondary School, also appealed for the establishment of a smart school in Awgbu to further enhance the local educational infrastructure.
Grateful corps member Mrs. Eucharia Nwobere and scholarship recipient Ms. Chisom Igbo both pledged to make the most of these opportunities, vowing to excel academically and give back to the community.
The event concluded with the formal presentation of scholarship cheques to the beneficiaries.
The Golden-20 Association, a non-profit organization, remains steadfast in its mission to foster unity and invest in human capital development within the Awgbu community.
