Former President Laurent Gbagbo is seeking to divorce his estranged wife Simone Gbagbo. In the latest statement circulating on social spaces, Gbagbo’s longest serving lawyer, Claude Mentenon said the former president has filed divorce papers in court to end his marriage with Simone who has repeatedly refused to consent to her husband’s request for a mutually agreed separation agreement.
The former president’s divorce move comes 72 hours after returning to Cote d’ Ivoire after the International Criminal Court (ICC) acquitted him of war related crimes during the 2010 post-election violence.
The 2010 post-election violence killed over 3,000 people after Gbagbo refused to accept defeat so that he was taken to ICC and stayed in Hague for almost a decade.
The court will soon decide on Gbagbo and Simone’s marriage which started in 1989. The couple has two daughters.
