Loss of Lives Recorded in Easter Day Attack on Benue Community, Nigeria

An Easter Day attack in Nigeria has resulted in multiple deaths in Mbatsada, a settlement in Mbalom community, Gwer East Local Government Area of Benue State, with several others injured.

The incident occurred during the Easter celebration and has been linked to suspected armed herdsmen, once again drawing attention to the recurring security challenges in parts of the state.

Benue has witnessed repeated clashes over the years, often involving farming communities and suspected herders, leading to casualties and displacement.

Confirming the development, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Udeme Edet, said security operatives were deployed immediately after distress calls were received from residents.

A joint security team later combed the area and recovered the bodies of the victims, which were evacuated to the General Hospital in Aliade.

According to the police, preliminary investigations suggest that the attack may be connected to underlying tensions within the community, although the exact cause has yet to be determined.

To restore calm, senior police officers, including the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations and the Area Commander in Gboko, have been deployed to coordinate security efforts.

The State Criminal Investigation Department has also launched a full-scale investigation, while tactical units such as the Police Mobile Force have been mobilised to track down those responsible.

Commissioner of Police, CP Ifeanyi Emenari, assured residents of the command’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property.

He urged the public to remain calm and support ongoing investigations by providing credible information.

The attack has renewed concerns over the safety of rural communities in Benue State, particularly during festive periods, as residents continue to call for more effective security measures to prevent further violence.
