May Wisdom Guide Those in Power: Pope Leo Makes Fresh Plea for Peace Across a Troubled World
As wars, political tensions and humanitarian crises continue to unsettle nations, Pope Leo XIV has renewed his call for global peace, urging leaders across the world to pursue justice, wisdom and lasting reconciliation rather than conflict.
Speaking during the Angelus prayer at St. Peter’s Square on Saturday, the Pope appealed for divine guidance for those in positions of authority, praying that their decisions would move the world closer to peace.
“May divine wisdom enlighten the consciences of those who hold authority and guide their decisions toward the sincere pursuit of a just and lasting peace,” he said before thousands of worshippers gathered at the Vatican.
The Pope’s latest appeal came at the close of May, a month traditionally dedicated by Catholics to devotion to the Virgin Mary and special prayers through the Rosary.
Throughout the month, churches and believers across the world have held prayers for countries torn apart by violence and instability.
A day earlier, Pope Leo led a Rosary gathering at the Lourdes Grotto inside the Vatican Gardens, where thousands joined physically while many more participated remotely through Marian shrines spread across different countries.
During the prayer, he asked for what he described as the precious gift that only God can grant, peace.
The Pope also used the occasion to speak about compassion for people battling illness, as Italy marked its 25th Day of Relief, an initiative focused on easing suffering and promoting humane healthcare.
He praised caregivers, volunteers and health workers who stand beside the sick, encouraging what he described as a culture rooted in closeness, empathy and practical care for vulnerable people.
In another moment of outreach, Pope Leo greeted pilgrims gathered at Piekary, a historic Marian shrine in Poland long associated with devotion to Mary and social justice.
The annual pilgrimage attracts tens of thousands of worshippers and remains one of the country’s enduring religious traditions.
The Pope’s repeated calls for peace come at a time when several regions of the world continue to face conflict, displacement and uncertainty, with faith leaders increasingly urging dialogue over division and healing over hostility.
