Authorities in Nevada have opened a murder investigation after a man was discovered dead at the Burning Man festival on Saturday night.
According to the Pershing County Sheriff’s Office, a festival-goer alerted a police officer at about 21:14 local time (04:14 GMT) to a man “lying in a pool of blood” at a campsite. Officers found him “obviously deceased” as the festival’s signature effigy, the Man, was beginning to burn.
The victim’s identity has not yet been released. Organisers of Burning Man said they were cooperating with law enforcement and urged attendees not to interfere with the investigation.
Part of the Black Rock Desert site was cordoned off as police and forensic teams examined the scene. Sheriff Jerry Allen said several people nearby were interviewed, adding that while the incident “appears to be a singular crime,” participants should remain vigilant.
A heightened police presence will remain in the area while inquiries continue.
Burning Man, staged annually in Black Rock City, draws tens of thousands of people to what organisers call “a temporary metropolis” in the desert. The event, which concludes on Monday, has seen fatalities before — including a man who ran into the burning effigy in 2017 and a death during severe flooding in 2023.
