Friday’s suicide bombing that killed at least 24 people in Konduga, Borno State, has raised new concerns about the evolving tactics of insurgent groups and the persistent security challenges in North-East Nigeria. The attack, which occurred at a crowded food joint around 10:00 p.m., was carried out by a female suicide bomber, according to reports by the Daily Post.
Security analysts note that the use of a female attacker reflects a deliberate strategy employed by insurgent factions to exploit reduced suspicion toward women in civilian environments. This approach has been used in previous attacks across Borno and neighbouring states, particularly by Boko Haram and its splinter groups.
The location and timing of the blast suggest that the bomber aimed to inflict maximum casualties. That the attack occurred near Maiduguri, a heavily guarded city, has led to renewed scrutiny of the effectiveness of local surveillance and early warning systems.
While a combined team of military personnel, police EOD units, CBRN teams, CJTF members, and local hunters responded swiftly to secure the scene, the fact that the attacker was able to detonate the device in such a public setting highlights ongoing gaps in intelligence and community-level security.
As of Saturday, no group had claimed responsibility for the bombing. However, authorities and security observers say the incident is consistent with the tactics of known insurgent elements operating in the region. Investigations are ongoing to identify the attacker and determine possible links to terror networks.
The bombing has reinforced calls for enhanced intelligence coordination, improved community engagement, and strengthened protection in areas considered vulnerable to extremist violence.
