The Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State, Nigeria, has launched a comprehensive drainage clearing and desilting campaign aimed at preventing erosion and flooding during the peak rainy season.
According to the council chairman, Hon. Shedrack Azubuike, the initiative is designed to promote public health, improve community aesthetics, and ensure the free flow of stormwater across all parts of the LGA.
Azubuike emphasized the importance of regular drainage maintenance in addressing environmental and health hazards linked to blocked drains. “This effort aligns with Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s ‘Operation Clean, Green, and Sustainable Anambra’, which promotes safe, neat, and livable communities,” he stated.
He noted that clearing the drainage channels would help avert preventable disasters such as flooding, which often leads to loss of life and property. “Our vision is to make Orumba South a model of cleanliness in Anambra State,” he added.
Azubuike also urged residents to adopt environmentally responsible behaviors and avoid dumping refuse into drains, warning that such practices contribute heavily to blockages and increase the risk of flooding.
