Nigeria Troops Overpower ISWAP Assault on Borno Base, Scores of Terrorists Killed
A fierce confrontation erupted in northeastern Nigeria after suspected Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters launched an attack on a military base in Borno State, leaving scores of insurgents dead.
The assault targeted the Forward Operating Base in Magumeri during the early hours of Thursday.
According to military authorities, the attackers attempted to infiltrate the facility under poor visibility, leading to a heavy gun battle with troops stationed at the base.
Although the insurgents reportedly breached a section of the camp during the assault, soldiers were said to have regained control after a fierce counteroffensive that forced the attackers to retreat with heavy losses.
Military officials disclosed that security operatives later discovered blood trails, dragged bodies and several corpses around the surrounding area, suggesting the militants suffered significant casualties during the failed operation.
Weapons recovered from the fleeing fighters reportedly included anti-aircraft guns, AK-47 rifles and ammunition.
The military, however, confirmed that two soldiers lost their lives during the clash, while an officer and other injured personnel are currently receiving medical treatment.
Some equipment and temporary structures within the base were also damaged by fire during the intense exchange.
The latest attack underscores the persistent security threat in Nigeria’s northeast, where troops continue to battle insurgent groups despite sustained military operations across the region.
