The Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) has condemned Femi Adesina, former spokesperson to President Muhammadu Buhari, for his controversial comments about Nigeria’s healthcare system. In a recent television interview, Adesina suggested that Buhari’s health may have worsened earlier if he had relied on Nigerian hospitals, citing a lack of proper medical equipment and expertise.
Dr. Diamond Tamunokuro, Chairman of the NMA in Rivers State, fiercely criticized Adesina’s remarks, calling them an insult to the millions of Nigerians who rely on the country’s healthcare system. Tamunokuro further pointed to the failures of Buhari’s administration in addressing Nigeria’s healthcare challenges, saying Adesina’s comments were a reflection of that neglect.
“The healthcare system is something that millions of Nigerians trust for care, from routine check-ups to specialized treatments. To suggest that the system is incapable of providing quality care is a slap in the face to those who depend on it daily,” said Tamunokuro. He added that Adesina’s remarks only underscored the lack of meaningful progress during Buhari’s time in office, particularly in healthcare development.
Tamunokuro urged Nigerians to demand accountability from political leaders and question their true commitment to improving the nation’s health infrastructure. “We need leaders who are willing to invest in our healthcare system, not just seek treatment abroad,” he stated.
He also praised the dedication of Nigerian doctors, emphasizing that despite limited resources, they are working hard to improve care and save lives. “Healthcare in Nigeria is growing, and more people are receiving quality treatment, but the government needs to provide the support needed to strengthen the system even further,” Tamunokuro concluded.
Former President Buhari, who passed away on July 13, 2025, in London after a prolonged illness, was buried on July 15 in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State.
