Over 20 Feared Dead After Boat Capsizes on Uganda’s Nguse River
A search and rescue operation is ongoing in western Uganda after a boat carrying more than 30 passengers capsized on the Nguse River, leaving at least 20 people feared dead.
The incident occurred on Tuesday evening in Kigadi District when the vessel, said to be a locally made canoe, overturned while transporting passengers and bags of charcoal.
Eight survivors have been rescued and are currently receiving medical treatment, while emergency teams continue efforts to locate those still missing.
Authorities have also called on relatives of passengers to assist in identifying victims.
Marine police have launched an investigation into the cause of the accident.
Preliminary reports suggest that overloading, travelling at night, and the condition of the boat may have contributed to the tragedy.
Boat accidents remain a recurring problem in the region, often blamed on poor safety standards and overcrowding.
The latest incident is another reminder of the dangers many communities face while relying on water transport.
