Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has criticized the Nigerian government for increasing the cost of international passports, saying the decision adds to the economic hardship already facing citizens.
In a post on his official X account on Thursday, the former Anambra State governor said the hike shows how Nigeria’s leaders are more focused on burdening the people than easing their struggles.
The Federal Government announced that a 32-page passport booklet will now cost ₦100,000, while a 64-page booklet goes for ₦200,000.
Obi argued that in Nigeria, where the new minimum wage is ₦70,000, it is disturbing that the cost of a single passport is higher than what workers earn in a month.
“It is alarming that in Nigeria today, the price of an international passport is higher than the monthly salary of a worker,” Obi wrote, stressing that such policies keep making life harder for ordinary citizens.
