Paris Saint-Germain claimed the UEFA Super Cup for the first time in the club’s history, defeating Tottenham Hotspur 4-3 on penalties after a dramatic 2-2 draw in Udine, Italy, on Wednesday night.
Tottenham, under new head coach Thomas Frank, appeared to be in control after goals from Micky van de Ven in the 39th minute and Cristian Romero early in the second half put them 2-0 ahead.
But PSG mounted a late rally. Substitute Lee Kang-in pulled a goal back in the 85th minute, and Gonçalo Ramos equalized deep into stoppage time, heading home in the fourth minute of added time to force a shootout.
The penalty shootout began poorly for PSG as Vitinha missed their first kick. However, goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier made a crucial save from Van de Ven, and Mathys Tel missed his effort for Spurs. Ramos, Ousmane Dembélé, and Lee Kang-in converted their penalties for PSG, with Nuno Mendes stepping up to score the winner.
Tottenham’s Solanke, Bentancur, and Porro converted from the spot, but it wasn’t enough to stop PSG from lifting the trophy.
The victory adds to PSG’s remarkable 2025, with this being their fifth trophy of the year. It follows their historic Champions League win in May, when Luis Enrique’s side crushed Inter Milan 5-0 — the largest margin of victory in the history of the final. That night, teenage star Désiré Doué scored twice, as PSG overwhelmed the Italian side.
PSG’s win in Udine marks a significant milestone not just for the club but for French football, making them the first team from France to win the Super Cup. It also represents a successful evolution of the squad following the departure of Kylian Mbappé, with a younger generation now leading the charge.
Luis Enrique’s team will now turn their attention to domestic duties, starting their Ligue 1 season away to Nantes on Sunday. Tottenham begin their Premier League campaign at home to Burnley on Saturday.
