Rivers APC Hails Tinubu’s Stand, Says Presidency Has Settled Wike–Fubara Leadership Dispute
The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) says President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s position on the lingering political rift involving Governor Siminalayi Fubara and Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, has finally put the matter to rest.
The party made the assertion following a public clarification from the Presidency affirming Governor Fubara as the recognised leader of the APC in Rivers State.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Thursday, monitored by AfricaWorld News, President Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Policy and Communication, Daniel Bwala, said the President supports Fubara’s right to govern without interference, stressing that party structure places sitting governors at the helm of their state chapters.
While acknowledging Wike’s political relevance and his contributions to the Tinubu administration, Bwala noted that the former Rivers governor is not a member of the APC and therefore cannot exercise authority over the party in the state.
Reacting in a statement issued by its Publicity Secretary, Darlington Nwauju, the Rivers APC described the Presidency’s clarification as a validation of its long-held position on the Rivers leadership crisis.
According to the party, the President’s stance aligns with the APC constitution and long-standing convention that recognises elected governors as leaders of the party in their respective states.
The party commended President Tinubu for what it described as consistency and respect for internal party democracy, noting that the clarification would help restore cohesion and direction within the Rivers APC.
Rivers APC also took a swipe at the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, over comments attributed to him on the impeachment threats against Governor Fubara and his deputy, describing such remarks as incompatible with party principles.
The party urged the APC National Working Committee to take note of existing court rulings on the Rivers APC leadership and immediately schedule ward, local government and state congresses to resolve internal disputes.
It further called on Governor Fubara, in his capacity as party leader in the state, to convene a stakeholders’ meeting aimed at charting a clear path forward for the APC in Rivers State.
