South Africa Coach Broos Slams Free State Stadium Pitch Ahead Of Nigeria Clash
South Africa’s head coach, Hugo Broos, has expressed dissatisfaction with the pitch at Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein, describing it as “nonsense” ahead of Tuesday’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying clash against Nigeria’s Super Eagles.
Bafana Bafana are set to face Nigeria in a crucial Group C encounter, with both sides coming into the match on the back of victories — South Africa defeating Lesotho and Nigeria overcoming Rwanda.
Speaking at his pre-match press conference on Monday, Broos made it clear that he was unhappy with the playing surface.
“I have said already before, I am not happy with the pitch either,” Broos told reporters when asked about the condition of the venue.
“There were people that blamed me that I didn’t want to play here [Free State Stadium]. This is stupid. This is nonsense. We would like to have a very good pitch like we had before.”
The state of the pitch has been a subject of debate in recent weeks, with some critics warning it could affect the quality of play in what is expected to be one of the most decisive fixtures of the qualifiers.
Nigeria and South Africa are long-time rivals in African football, and Tuesday’s clash is seen as a key battle in determining who secures an early advantage on the road to the 2026 World Cup.
