Diplomats from Eswatini, Malawi and other countries were yesterday, Friday, expelled by the South African Government over alcohol smuggling scandal, Malawi’s Information Ministry confirms.
South African authorities detailed reasons for the expulsion in a diplomatic notice but affected governments are still waiting for formal communication on the development.
Malawi Information Ministry said the country cherished the bilateral relationship with the South Africa adding that the development would have no effect the cordial ties.
MBC report says diplomats have been given a persona non grata status meaning their diplomatic immunity from arrest and prosecution has been removed.
Diplomats are facing allegations related to alcohol smuggling bought at duty free shops in South Africa.
