SOUTH AFRICA: South Africa to Host U-20 AFCON 2025 After 13-Year Hiatus

South Africa has been selected to host the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in January 2025, marking the tournament’s return to the country after 13 years. The Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced, “The Confederation of African Football is proud to bring the U-20 AFCON back to South Africa after 13 years, providing a platform for future stars to shine.”

In the last edition held in South Africa, Nigeria’s Flying Eagles secured a narrow victory over Senegal to claim the title. To qualify for the 2025 tournament, Nigeria’s Flying Eagles must first navigate the WAFU B qualification tournament, which will be held in Togo next month. “To reach South Africa in 2025, the Flying Eagles must first prove their strength in the WAFU B qualifiers,” noted a Nigerian football analyst.

Despite finishing third in the 2023 U-20 AFCON, the Flying Eagles remain determined to perform well and reclaim their continental glory. “In 2012, Nigeria’s Flying Eagles triumphed over Senegal, and they are eager to reclaim their glory in 2025.”
