South Africa Votes in Key Election, ANC’s Power at Risk

South Africans began voting today in what is considered the most significant election in three decades, potentially altering the country’s political landscape.

This election threatens the long-standing dominance of the African National Congress (ANC), which led South Africa out of apartheid in 1994. With nearly half of the population living in poverty and an unemployment rate of 32%, voter discontent could push the ANC below a 50% majority for the first time. If this happens, the ANC may need to form a coalition to maintain power.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has urged for more time and patience, citing improvements since apartheid, but faces fierce opposition from numerous parties. Final results are expected by Sunday.
