Sowore Speaks Out on Nnamdi Kanu’s Situation at Sokoto Prison
Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has claimed that detained IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, is now enjoying celebrity-like status at the Sokoto Custodial Centre, where he is serving a life sentence.
Sowore spoke to journalists at the Federal High Court in Abuja on Tuesday, insisting that the Federal Government had made what he described as “the biggest mistake of its life” by sending Kanu to prison.
According to him, the environment the government believed would humiliate Kanu has instead elevated him, turning him into a major attraction among inmates and visitors.
Sowore alleged that the sentencing judge, Justice James Omotosho, would eventually apologize to Kanu for the life sentence, comparing the situation to past instances where authorities later admitted wrongdoing.
He said the government underestimated the influence Kanu wields, claiming that the IPOB leader now commands unusual respect within the custodial facility.
“When they took him to Sokoto thinking they would disgrace him, he ended up turning the place into something of a pilgrimage ground,” Sowore said, adding that people who previously refused to protest against the sentence were now “rushing to Sokoto” to visit him.
Sowore also sought authorization from Kanu’s family to help manage requests from those seeking access to him, saying the influx of visitors was growing daily.
He argued that the government’s decision to jail Kanu had backfired, as the move had instead boosted his stature and visibility despite the intention to diminish him.
