Venus Williams made a victorious return to professional tennis, accompanied by a surprise announcement: she is engaged.
The 45-year-old tennis star, who had been away from competition for 16 months, became the second-oldest woman to win a tour-level singles match. After her victory, Williams thanked her fiancé, Danish-born Italian model and actor Andrea Preti, who was in the crowd at the DC Open, according to IMDB.
Williams, a seven-time Grand Slam singles champion, kicked off her comeback with a doubles win on Monday, followed by a singles victory on Tuesday, before losing in doubles on Wednesday.
She is now preparing to face Magdalena Frech in the second round on Thursday night.
According to the statement she made on her X handle @VeeSTARWillaims”I’m not here for anyone else except for me, and also I have nothing to prove…I’m here for me cause I want to be here… No one has put in the work, I put in the work” – Venus Williams đź‘‘.
