SPP Raises Bar on Climate Accountability with 2024 GHG Emissions Report

The Society for Planet and Prosperity (SPP), a leading environmental NGO, has taken a bold step toward climate transparency with the publication of its 2024 Green House Gas (GHG) Emissions Report.

This is contained in a statement signed by Mr Ugochukwu Uzuegbu, Communications Specialist, SPP, and made available to newsmen on Tuesday in Lagos.

The statement said that the pioneering move sets a national standard for organisational accountability under Nigeria’s Climate Change Act (2021).

It noted that under Sections 19 and 24 of the Act, organisations with 50 or more employees and all public entities are mandated to implement annual carbon reduction measures and report their progress.

According to it, while enforcement of these provisions remains limited, SPP has taken the initiative to self-audit and publicly disclose its carbon footprint—demonstrating leadership and commitment to environmental stewardship.

Speaking at the release of the report, SPP President, Prof. Chukwumerije Okereke, emphasized the need for integrity in climate action.

“Policy without enforcement is a promise unkept. By publishing our own emissions report and setting clear, time-bound reduction targets, we are proving that environmental responsibility begins with accountability.

“I am proud that SPP is leading this vital transformation,” Okereke said.

The report revealed that SPP emitted 2.011 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent between February 1, 2024, and January 31, 2025.

The organisation identified four key emission hotspots: diesel generator use, fuel-powered staff travel, reliance on bottled water, and energy-intensive video conferencing systems—together accounting for 86.1 per cent of total emissions.

It said that to address these challenges, SPP has committed to a 30 per cent emissions reduction by 2030.

The Society mapped out its planned interventions to include:

“Transitioning to solar energy to reduce generator dependence.

“Installing on-site water purification systems to eliminate bottled water use

“Reducing digital emissions by optimizing webinar scheduling and participation.”

SPP’s Executive Director, Mr. Edwin Orugbo, expressed hope that the report will serve as a catalyst for wider change.

“We are under no illusion that change is easy. However, we hope that this report will inspire a nationwide shift toward real sustainability as organisations across sectors prioritise emissions tracking and sustainability reporting.”

The report noted that Nigeria has pledged to achieve net zero by 2060, with Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs 2.0) targeting a 20 per cent unconditional and 47 per cent conditional reduction in GHG emissions.

The reported noted that these targets which may change in its NDCs 3.0 can only be attained through whole-of-society actions.

It added that SPP’s exemplary action is therefore expected to motivate Nigeria’s public and private sectors to engage in audits of their emissions and subsequently take action to reduce their carbon footprints in line with the country’s targets, and in compliance with Mission 1.5 degrees of the Paris Agreement.

Elon Musk Becomes First Trillionaire in History Elon Musk has reportedly crossed a historic financial threshold, becoming the first individual to reach a net worth above $1 trillion, following the public listing of SpaceX. SpaceX, Musk’s aerospace company, began trading on the Nasdaq under the ticker SPCX, opening at $135 per share before rising sharply to about $165 in early trading. The surge lifted the company’s valuation beyond $2 trillion, driven by strong investor demand at launch. Prior to the IPO, Musk’s estimated wealth stood at roughly $813 billion. The increase in SpaceX’s market value pushed his total net worth past the trillion-dollar mark, according to financial reports tracking billionaire valuations. The milestone further distances Musk from other global billionaires, with his fortune now exceeding that of several top-ranking figures combined on global wealth indices. SpaceX now joins the upper tier of publicly traded companies in the United States, alongside tech giants such as Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, Alphabet, and Nvidia in total market value. The company continues to expand its reach through Starlink, its satellite internet service, and xAI, its artificial intelligence venture behind the Grok chatbot, reinforcing Musk’s influence across multiple high-growth technology sectors. The development underscores the accelerating financial impact of space commercialization and artificial intelligence in shaping modern global markets.

Strong 7.8 Quake in Philippines Leaves Multiple Dead, Sparks Widespread Tsunami Alerts A powerful 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck the southern Philippines on Monday morning, leaving multiple people dead and triggering tsunami alerts across several Pacific countries as authorities rushed to contain the unfolding disaster. The quake hit near Sarangani province in Mindanao at a shallow depth, sending violent tremors through towns and cities including General Santos, where buildings collapsed and residents fled into the streets in panic. Emergency officials confirmed fatalities across different locations, including Davao Occidental, South Cotabato and General Santos, while rescue teams combed through debris in search of survivors as aftershocks continued to rattle the region. A second quake measuring 6.1 struck hours later, worsening the damage and intensifying fears among already displaced communities. Preliminary readings from the United States Geological Survey and other agencies showed slight variations in magnitude and depth, as scientists continued to analyse seismic data in real time. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued alerts for several countries, warning that waves could reach coastal areas of the Philippines and parts of Indonesia, Palau, Taiwan and Papua New Guinea within hours. In some coastal zones, waves of more than three metres were considered possible. Authorities ordered immediate evacuations in vulnerable coastal communities, urging residents to move quickly to higher ground as a precaution against potential tsunami impact. Flights were suspended at General Santos International Airport, while schools and public services were temporarily shut down across affected areas as emergency operations expanded. President Ferdinand Marcos called for urgent action and calm, stressing that saving lives remained the top priority as rescue efforts intensified across the region. The Philippines, located along the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” is one of the most seismically active countries in the world, frequently exposed to earthquakes and volcanic activity. Neighbouring Japan and other Pacific nations also issued tsunami advisories as monitoring agencies continued to track possible wave developments across the region.
