Trump Draws a Red Line in Hormuz, Orders US Navy to Strike Mine-Laying Boats
Tensions have sharply escalated in the Strait of Hormuz after Donald Trump issued a direct warning that American naval forces will take immediate action against any vessels suspected of planting mines in the busy shipping corridor.
Speaking via his Truth Social platform on Thursday, Trump said the US Navy had been instructed to respond without delay to threats in the waterway, adding that mine-clearing operations are already ongoing.
The move signals a tougher stance by Washington as it seeks to restore full access to one of the world’s most critical oil transit routes.
The latest development comes amid a deepening standoff with Iran, which has restricted movement through the strait, allowing only limited and approved vessels to pass.
Tehran has tied its position to ongoing US pressure on its ports, insisting the restrictions will remain until those measures are lifted.
Diplomatic efforts to ease the crisis have so far struggled to gain momentum. Planned talks in Islamabad remain uncertain, with Iran yet to confirm its participation.
Meanwhile, the prolonged impasse is beginning to weigh heavily on the global economy, particularly in the energy market, as fears grow over potential disruptions to oil supply.
Trump also suggested internal divisions within Iran’s leadership were complicating negotiations, while maintaining that the United States holds firm control over the situation in Hormuz.
He indicated that normal access to the waterway would depend on Iran agreeing to a broader peace deal.
