Uganda has inked a deal with a business association from the United Arab Emirates to construct a new international airport, President Yoweri Museveni’s office announced on Friday.

This development will mark Uganda’s third international airport and underscores the UAE’s expanding economic footprint in the East African nation. The airport, set to be built near Kidepo National Park in northeastern Uganda, will be strategically located close to the country’s border with Kenya.

The agreement signifies a notable expansion of the UAE’s interests in Uganda, which have predominantly centered around renewable energy, oil, and gas sectors.

“The establishment of a third international airport is a significant milestone for Uganda,” Museveni’s office said in a statement. “This infrastructure development will enhance connectivity, promote tourism, and stimulate economic growth in the region.”

Kidepo National Park, renowned for its rich wildlife and stunning landscapes, is expected to benefit from increased tourist inflows due to improved access.

The new airport is anticipated to boost local economies, create jobs, and provide new business opportunities for the surrounding communities.

The UAE business association’s investment reflects a growing trend of Gulf states deepening their economic ties with African nations through substantial infrastructure projects.

Details regarding the timeline for construction and the financial specifics of the agreement were not disclosed. However, the statement emphasized the potential transformative impact of the airport on Uganda’s aviation sector and broader economic landscape.

The planned airport is poised to complement Entebbe International Airport, Uganda’s main gateway, and the newly constructed Hoima International Airport, enhancing the country’s aviation capacity and positioning Uganda as a pivotal regional transport hub.

“This project aligns with our vision to develop world-class infrastructure that supports our economic ambitions and integrates us more fully into the global economy,” President Museveni said.

The announcement has been met with optimism from various stakeholders, including tourism operators and local businesses, who foresee significant benefits from the increased accessibility and investment.
