US Signals Possible Military Action Against Iran If Nuclear Talks Collapse — Hegseth

The United States has warned that it could resume military operations against Iran if ongoing diplomatic efforts fail to produce an agreement, according to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.

Speaking on Saturday during the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore, a major defence and security forum for global military leaders and diplomats, Hegseth said Washington remains prepared for all outcomes as negotiations continue between both countries.

He stressed that the US maintains sufficient military capacity to act if necessary, adding that its stockpiles and global readiness position it strongly for any renewed escalation.

“Our stockpiles are more than suited for that, both there and around the globe,” he said, noting that the US defence system is being rapidly expanded to support operations worldwide.

Hegseth also emphasized that the United States is not shifting focus away from the Asia-Pacific region despite its involvement in tensions with Iran, insisting that Washington is capable of managing multiple strategic priorities at once.

He credited President Donald Trump’s approach to the situation, describing efforts to reach a deal that would prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons as ongoing and deliberate.

The remarks come as US and Iranian negotiators continue efforts to bridge differences that have stalled a potential agreement, including proposals aimed at extending a fragile truce while broader discussions continue.

Reports indicate that Trump is expected to review final proposals in a closed-door White House meeting, with options that could extend a temporary ceasefire and allow more time for a long-term settlement.

Tensions between both countries have remained high following months of conflict involving US and Israeli strikes on Iranian-linked targets, which have contributed to rising instability and disruptions in global energy markets.
