US Warns Nigerian Politicians Over Corruption, Issues Visa Ban Threat
The United States has cautioned that Nigerian politicians and government officials involved in corruption could face visa restrictions.
In a statement shared on its official X handle, @USinNigeria, the U.S. Mission said accountability applies to all, regardless of status. It added that even high-profile individuals could be barred from entering America if found guilty of graft.
This comes amid ongoing concerns over mismanagement of public funds and abuse of office in Nigeria. Washington has in the past imposed similar restrictions on politicians linked to electoral violence and voter intimidation, particularly during the 2020 and 2022 elections.
Analysts say the warning signals that the U.S. is monitoring Nigeria’s governance issues closely, especially as local anti-corruption agencies face criticism of political interference.
The U.S. also reiterated its support for Nigeria’s anti-graft institutions, including the EFCC and ICPC, through funding and training to strengthen their capacity.
On a separate note, the U.S. Mission urged Nigerian students to use their visas responsibly. Speaking at the 2025 EducationUSA Fair in Abuja, Public Diplomacy Officer Brian Neubert encouraged students to comply with visa rules and maximize opportunities available to them in the U.S.
He noted that representatives from 28 American universities attended the fair to recruit students and praised Nigerian youths for their creativity, resilience, and innovation.
