WAEC Chaos Forces Students Into Late-Night Exams, Sparks Safety Concerns
Logistical setbacks in the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) have disrupted exam schedules across parts of Lagos and other states, forcing candidates to write core papers long after normal hours.
The delays were linked to the late arrival of examination materials at several centres, leaving students idle for hours before papers eventually commenced. In some locations, candidates were still writing as late as 10 p.m.
The extended schedule has raised alarm among parents, teachers, and school administrators, who say the situation exposes students to unnecessary risks, especially when examinations end after dark.
The disruption has also renewed scrutiny of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), with critics pointing to repeated logistical failures that have affected exam administration in recent years.
Similar cases were recorded in previous exam cycles, where candidates in some centres reportedly finished papers late into the night, prompting ongoing questions about coordination and preparedness.
WAEC has acknowledged operational challenges in the conduct of the examinations and says efforts are underway to improve logistics and prevent further delays.
However, the latest incident has intensified pressure on the examination body to implement urgent reforms that ensure candidates are not subjected to unsafe and unpredictable exam conditions.
