The Zimbabwean government has issued a strong condemnation of a scholarship program offered by the LGBTQ+ community, labeling it as a “sinister plot” to lure young students into “abominable and devilish” activities.

Vice-President Constantino Chiwenga, speaking on behalf of the government, described the scholarship offer as “unlawful, unchristian, anti-Zimbabwean, and anti-African.”

He accused foreign interests of promoting the scholarships, labeling their actions as “criminal” and a “grave affront” to the country’s national values as a Christian nation.

The statement issued by the government has sparked widespread debate and controversy, with human rights groups condemning the government’s stance as discriminatory and a violation of individuals’ rights to education and freedom of expression.

The LGBTQ+ community in Zimbabwe has defended the scholarship program, stating that it aims to provide educational opportunities to less privileged students regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. They argue that access to education should be a fundamental right for all individuals, irrespective of their background or personal beliefs.

However, the government’s stance reflects ongoing tensions surrounding LGBTQ+ rights in Zimbabwe, where same-sex relationships remain criminalized under the country’s laws.

This latest development underscores the challenges faced by LGBTQ+ individuals in Zimbabwe and highlights the broader struggle for equality and acceptance in the country.

As the debate continues, it remains to be seen how the government’s condemnation will shape the next set of activities in the LGBTQ+ Community.
