The Primate of the Church of Nigeria, The Most Revโd Dr. Henry C. Ndukuba, has approved the appointment of The Venerable Barrister Festus Opara, Ph.D., as the new General Secretary of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion).
In a statement issued by the outgoing General Secretary, The Ven. Dr. Paul Dajur, it was revealed that Ven. Barr. Oparaโs appointment followed a rigorous and merit-based selection process, during which he demonstrated outstanding competence and emerged as the most suitable candidate for the position.
His appointment became necessary following the election of Dr. Dajur as the Bishop of the newly created Diocese of Keffi-Karshi Missionary Diocese earlier this month.
As General Secretary, Ven. Barr. Opara will serve as the Chief Administrative Officer of the Church, working closely with the Primate to ensure effective coordination of national activities, communication, and governance in line with the Constitution and Canons of the Church of Nigeria.
His appointment officially takes effect on Saturday, November 1, 2025.
Before this appointment, Ven. Barr. Opara served as the Canon Theologian of the Diocese of Owerri, where he distinguished himself in service, scholarship, and leadership.
In his remarks, the Primate expressed confidence that Ven. Barr. Oparaโs passion, dedication, and wealth of experience will greatly enhance the work and mission of the Church. He prayed that โthe Lord who has called him to this sacred office will grant him wisdom, grace, and strength to serve faithfully, to the glory of His Name and for the good of His Church.
