Kaylia Nemour made history at Paris 2024 by becoming the first African to win an Olympic gold in artistic gymnastics.
The 17-year-old secured the gold medal with a score of 15.700 in the uneven bars final, showcasing a flawless routine filled with complex maneuvers. “I’m so shocked, it’s the dream of all my life,” Nemour said, reflecting her amazement. This victory is Algeria’s sixth Olympic gold since it first competed in Tokyo 1964 and highlights the nation’s growing prominence in international sports.
Nemour, who had previously earned silver at the world championships and switched her allegiance from France to Algeria after a federation dispute, delivered an impressive performance that also emphasized the increasing global presence of African athletes in gymnastics. The competition saw reigning world champion Qiu Qiyuan of China take silver, while the defending Olympic champion, Belgium’s Nina Derwael, finished fourth. Nemour’s triumph not only celebrates her personal achievement but also inspires future generations of African gymnasts.
