Pope Leo XIV Urges World Not to Lose Hope as War and Suffering Persist
Pope Leo XIV has urged people around the world to hold firmly to hope in Christ despite the growing impact of wars, conflict and human suffering, saying faith offers strength even in the darkest moments.

Speaking during his Sunday Angelus prayer in St. Peter’s Square, the Pope reflected on the Gospel reading from Matthew 11:25-30, encouraging believers to turn to Jesus when faced with life’s burdens rather than relying solely on human strength.
He said Christ continues to walk alongside those who are weary, reminding the faithful that God never abandons people in times of pain or uncertainty.
The pontiff described Jesus as the source of freedom, forgiveness and lasting hope, stressing that His victory over evil came through the sacrifice of the cross.
“In slavery, Christ is liberation. Amid the scourge of war, Christ is hope. In the hour of sin, Christ is forgiveness,” Pope Leo said.

He explained that Christianity is not a path of despair or unnecessary hardship but an invitation to discover true freedom through love, humility and trust in God.
The Pope also warned against pride, saying people who place too much confidence in their own knowledge can fail to recognize God’s presence and guidance.
Instead, he encouraged Christians to embrace humility, noting that God’s wisdom is revealed most clearly to those with open and sincere hearts.
Referring to Jesus’ invitation for the weary to come to Him, Pope Leo said God’s message is especially meant for people carrying emotional, spiritual or physical burdens.

He concluded by encouraging Christians to imitate Christ’s self-giving love, saying that a life rooted in humility and compassion offers the surest path to peace, hope and salvation even in a troubled world.
