On Friday, Nigerian police used teargas to disperse women protesting at the National Stadium in Abuja on the ninth day of the #EndBadGovernance demonstrations.
The women, who were led by Dr. Abiola Akiode and Yemi Damolekun, represented organizations such as the Women Advocates Research and Documentation Center (WARDC) and Enough is Enough. Despite being instructed by the FCT Police to move inside the stadium, the protesters chose to remain outside, holding placards with messages like “End insecurity in Nigeria” and “Mr. President, we are hungry.”
According to FCT Police spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, “The women gathered at the stadium gate this morning and they were told to go inside the stadium for their protest, but they refused,” leading to the decision to use teargas to disperse them. The nationwide protests, which have spread across several states, are demanding economic and political reforms. However, the protests have occasionally turned violent, prompting some state governments to impose curfews.
