Ghana faces potential sanctions from CAF after fans stormed and vandalized Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi following the Black Stars’ 1-0 defeat to Angola in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations Qualifier. The fans, enraged by a 93rd-minute goal, threw objects onto the pitch and destroyed perimeter panels.
A video circulating online shows the chaotic scene, with fans “throwing plastic bottles and assorted objects.” Despite Ghana fielding six Premier League players, Angola’s disciplined defense left the team frustrated. The defeat also ended Ghana’s remarkable 24-year unbeaten streak at the stadium.
Earlier this year, Ghana was fined $15,000 by CAF for a similar fan invasion during a match against Cape Verde.
“This behavior, unfortunately, is becoming too common in African football,” an official noted, referencing other incidents like Nigeria’s fan invasion in 2022 after their World Cup qualifier against Ghana. CAF is expected to take strict action, as the governing body continues to crack down on such unsportsmanlike behavior across the continent.
