During his first official trip to Kyiv as Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer vowed to position Ukraine in the “strongest possible position” for 2025, emphasizing continued and robust support against Russia’s “illegal and barbaric invasion.”
The UK and Ukraine signed a “landmark 100-year partnership,” formalizing ongoing military and economic aid, including healthcare and drone technology.
Ukrainian President Zelensky called the day “truly historic,” underscoring the strengthened relationship. Sir Keir’s visit, delayed since taking office, highlighted long-term commitments to Ukraine’s security despite global uncertainties, including concerns over future US administration shifts.
Both leaders honored fallen soldiers at St Michael’s Golden-Domed Monastery, and as air raid sirens rang, Sir Keir reflected, “a reminder of the daily attacks and the resolve of the Ukrainian people.” He assured Zelensky, “We are with you not just today, for this year or the next – but for 100 years.”
His visit also included paying tribute at an apartment building attacked in a New Year’s Day drone strike, where two prominent scientists were killed, underscoring the constant threat faced by Ukrainians. “No one is safe,” said Kyiv’s military chief.
