A Malawian court has ruled that self-proclaimed prophet Shepherd Bushiri and his wife, Mary, should be extradited to South Africa to face charges of forgery, fraud, and jumping bail.

The couple fled South Africa in 2020 after violating bail conditions in a money laundering case. The court has ordered that they remain in custody until they are handed over to South African authorities.

Bushiri’s lawyer, Wapona Kita, has filed a request to suspend the extradition order and grant bail, arguing that his clients should not be detained while awaiting further legal proceedings.

Meanwhile, the South African government has welcomed the ruling, confirming that they will work closely with Malawian authorities to facilitate the Bushiris’ return for trial. The couple faces additional charges in South Africa, including rape and violations of financial, banking, aviation, and immigration laws.

The extradition marks a significant step in the high-profile case, which has drawn international attention and fueled debates over legal cooperation between the two nations.
