Shock and sadness have enveloped the Nigerian and UK nursing communities following the death of Nnena Miriam, a Nigerian nurse residing in Leeds, England.
Miriam was discovered lifeless in her apartment after friends raised concerns over her sudden disappearance. She had failed to respond to phone calls and missed scheduled shifts, prompting a close friend to report her missing to the police. Officers later found her dead in her home.
Fellow Nurses Africa, a group focused on supporting African healthcare professionals, confirmed the development in a statement issued on Wednesday.
“It is with heavy hearts that we announce the untimely passing of Nurse Nnena Miriam,” the group stated.
“Her last known contact was after her Sunday shift. After days of silence and failed attempts to reach her, a missing person report was filed. Police eventually located her deceased in her apartment.”
The news has devastated friends and colleagues, especially as it came shortly after Miriam returned to the UK from Nigeria, where she had celebrated her introduction ceremony ahead of her traditional wedding.
“She was meant to be celebrating a new chapter in her life,” the group said. “Instead, her loved ones are now facing a painful and unexpected loss.”
Described as compassionate and hardworking, Miriam was deeply respected within the healthcare field. Her passing has left many grappling with unanswered questions.
This tragedy is not the first involving Nigerian caregivers in the UK. In early 2024, another Nigerian, Chidimma Ezenyili, died after collapsing while caring for a client in Northamptonshire. She was confirmed dead two days later.
Investigations into Miriam’s cause of death are ongoing.
