Regina Askia-Williams, former beauty queen and celebrated actress, has extended a public apology to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, distancing herself from previous support for allegations made by Senator Natasha Akpoti.
In a Facebook post, Askia-Williams disclosed that her change of heart came after watching a live broadcast by Dr. Mgbeke Duru, who presented what he claimed to be compelling evidence discrediting Akpoti’s accusations.
“Just did one of the hardest things I tendered an unequivocal apology to my ‘Big Brother,’ the SP, after watching that earth-shaking interview by Dr. Duru,” she wrote. “Tonight, I ate humble pie.”
Askia-Williams admitted that she had initially tried to remain neutral but was deeply shaken by the content of the interview. Her words conveyed a sense of personal reckoning and regret: “I truly believed I was being fair, but I now realize I misjudged the situation. That ends today.”
She went on to express concern over the misuse of gender-based advocacy, cautioning against what she called the “weaponization of sympathy.”
“I wish her well,” she said of Senator Akpoti, “and extend my deepest sympathies to all women who genuinely endure sexual harassment. Weaponization of gender-based sympathies must be confronted as boldly as harassment itself.”
Thanking Dr. Duru for his exposé, Askia-Williams also voiced a note of skepticism: “I appreciate the clarity, but I pray this isn’t another episode of calculated deception.”
Closing her statement, she announced a return to her social media hiatus: “As for me, I’m resuming my sabbatical. Please, let no one drag me back. Thank you.”
Her apology marks a pivotal moment in the unfolding saga involving Senator Akpoti, who has faced mounting scrutiny following claims of falsehood and misrepresentation.
With national attention fixed on the case, Askia-Williams’ retraction adds emotional weight to an already complex narrative.
